Expected innovations in energy production

The current "Chart of the Month" from DLG-Agrifuture Insights shows which innovations would be necessary to enable agriculture to make an even greater contribution to the energy transition.

When it comes to shaping the energy transition, agriculture is an enormously important player and can make a major contribution. Farmers are already decentralised energy producers in many areas, from biogas plants to photovoltaics and agri-PV through to small wind turbines

Expected innovations in energy production

In the future, it will be crucial for renewable energies to be able to offer peak power in particular in line with demand. The survey conducted by DLG-Agrifuture Insights also shows the important role played by storage systems in this regard, in which all sectors of the industry across the board consider further innovations in this area to be very important.

In many cases, the subsidies for biogas plants under the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) will expire in the near future. If the owner decides to continue operating an existing plant, the question arises as to how it can be made fit for the future. Should it be made more flexible? Do you want to participate in the fuel market for the production of biomethane in future? Or are we already switching to the production and utilisation of hydrogen in a very forward-looking way? In the DLG-Agrifuture Insights survey, all industry representatives would also like to see further innovations in hydrogen technology in particular.

For science, there is still a great deal of potential for innovation, particularly in the areas of photovoltaics (PV) and agri-PV, but innovations in small wind turbines are also considered important by the participants. The slightly lower assessment of importance compared to PV can certainly be explained by the fact that small wind turbines are generally less cost-effective and cannot be realised at every location.

DLG-Agrifuture Insights – a comprehensive view on agricultural development

DLG-Agrifuture Insights is the DLG knowledge brand and platform for international trend analyses in the agricultural sector. It examines the business environment in agriculture in Germany and worldwide. For this purpose, farmers and people from agribusiness, science and consulting are surveyed annually on their assessments of the economic situation and development of agricultural businesses, as well as technology trends and innovations in the individual business sectors. A total of 4,183 people took part in the current survey in winter 2022/23, around 1,500 of them from abroad.
